08 Aug Retaining Walls
Climate change is with us and this is already affecting gardens with banks and steep slopes. The extra rain is making the ground go on the move. To help prevent this retaining may be needed.
All situations are different due to degree of slope and the structure of the ground below. The simplest way is to reduce the angle of slope by making it less but in private gardens this is not normally acceptable because we all prefer a level terrace to be able to sit on and not roll off!
Therefore banks are created which then need supporting. It is ideal to try and make banks of a metre or less as there are many materials that can be used without too much worry.
But where they are more than a metre high then one needs to create many smaller terraces which should be interlocked if possible or cut back into the bank and supported with a back stone material or ‘Dead man anchors’
